Police said the suspect stated during interrogation that he ‘wanted to kill Muslims’. Police also noted that due to his violent mindset, extremist ideology, and indications of a premeditated attack, he could pose a major threat to public safety if released.
Muslim youth victim of religious hatred in the USA, condition critical
The attack occurred on Monday (local time) at the Valley Fair Mall in West Valley City, Utah. According to the police affidavit, the victim had multiple stab wounds on various parts of his body and suffered excessive blood loss. Bystanders subdued and held the attacker to the ground before police arrived.
According to jail authorities, the 48-year-old accused, Peter Michael Larsen, has been taken to the Salt Lake County Jail on charges of attempted murder and use of a dangerous weapon.

The police booking affidavit stated that the victim was working at a kiosk (small shop). The accused admitted that he attacked the youth with the intent to kill him because of his Muslim identity.
According to local media The Salt Lake Tribune, local Imam Shuaib Din said that before the attack, the accused asked the youth about his name and religion and requested a bottle of water. As soon as the victim turned around to get the water, the attacker began stabbing him.
The Muslim youth has been hospitalized in critical condition. According to doctors, his condition is critical. A friend of the victim has launched a GoFundMe page to collect medical expenses. It is mentioned there that the youth was stabbed 15 times and requires multiple surgeries.
On the other hand, the accused was also taken to the hospital after being injured while being subdued by the crowd following the attack. After treatment, he was sent to the Salt Lake County Jail.
