Who is Major Mozzaffar, accused in Ziaur Rahman's murder?
Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police (DB) has arrested retired Major Mozzaffar Hossain, who was sentenced to death in the murder case of former President and BNP founder Ziaur Rahman and had been on the run for 45 years. He was arrested on Thursday (July 16) from the Banani DOHS area in the capital. After legal procedures, he was handed over to the Bangladesh Army.

DB sources said he was arrested in a special operation based on secret information. After verifying his identity and case documents, he was handed over to the army for further legal proceedings.

Who is Major Mozzaffar?

Major (Retd.) Mozzaffar Hossain is a former officer of the Bangladesh Army. He is one of the convicted accused in the case filed over the murder of then-President Ziaur Rahman at the Chittagong Circuit House on May 30, 1981. After the trial, the court sentenced him to death. However, following the verdict, he went into hiding and remained a fugitive for nearly 45 years, evading law enforcement agencies.

Sources related to the investigation claim that although attempts were made to locate him at various times, he managed to avoid arrest. Recently, based on intelligence information, his location was confirmed, and an operation was conducted to arrest him.

DB Additional Commissioner Shafiqul Islam told the media that a retired army officer named Major Mozzaffar was arrested from the Banani DOHS area. Necessary legal procedures are being followed.

The murder that changed the country's political history

On May 29, 1981, then-President Ziaur Rahman went to Chittagong on a two-day visit. The purpose of the visit was to resolve conflicts among local BNP leaders. After meetings throughout the day, he stayed overnight at the Chittagong Circuit House.

The next morning, on May 30, a group of rebel army officers attacked the Circuit House. President Ziaur Rahman was shot and killed in the attack. Later, the news of his death was broadcast on the radio.

After the incident, following the trial of the murder case, several army officers were sentenced to death. Some of them were arrested before the sentence was carried out, while others remained fugitives for a long time. Major (Retd.) Mozzaffar Hossain was one of those fugitive convicts.
