The wounds of that horrific day still linger today

Following this tragic accident, a shadow of mourning fell across the country. The severely burned and injured were admitted to various hospitals in the capital. After long treatment, many recovered and returned home, but some still bear the scars of burns on their bodies and the terrifying memories of that horrific day in their minds.

On the first anniversary, the Milestone family remembers the victims of the tragedy with deep sorrow and respect.

After the accident, the then interim government formed a 9-member investigation committee. After nearly three months of investigation, analyzing the testimonies of 150 people and 168 pieces of information, a report with 33 recommendations was submitted to Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.

The investigation report stated that due to a flight error during training, the situation went out of the pilot's control and the aircraft crashed. To ensure public safety in the future, it was recommended that all primary training flights of the Air Force be conducted outside Dhaka. Additionally, the expansion of runways at Barisal and Bogura airbases was also advised.

The report further mentioned that the building damaged in the accident was not constructed according to RAJUK's building code. Where the regulations required at least three staircases, there was only one. The investigation committee opined that the number of casualties could have been lower if there had been adequate staircases.

Meanwhile, although many of those injured in the accident have returned to normal life, many are still struggling with long-term physical and mental complications. Experts say that ensuring long-term medical treatment and mental support after such an accident is extremely important.

After one year, the issue of aviation safety has come to the forefront again. According to experts, it is necessary to further strengthen risk assessment, safety protocols, and emergency response capabilities when conducting military training flights over densely populated areas.

The Milestone tragedy is not just an accident; it is a symbol of irreparable loss for countless families. Even after a year, the memory of that day reminds us how important it is to ensure public safety, accountability, and humanitarian assistance.
