She made these remarks as the chief guest at a discussion meeting organized by the NCP district branch on Saturday (August 1) afternoon at the Sur Samrat Alauddin Music Auditorium in Brahmanbaria municipal town, marking the second anniversary of the July Popular Uprising.
Dr. Mahmuda Akhtar Mitu said that although the BNP long presented itself as the party of oppressed people, it has failed to maintain that position after coming to power. In her words, 'The oppressed never side with the oppressors. But you have again become oppressors.'
Criticizing Chhatra Dal, she said the organization has deviated from Begum Khaleda Zia's ideals and is now running the organization with terrorists. At the same time, she criticized Prime Minister Tariq Rahman's promise of 'jobs in every home,' claiming, 'The jobs that have been given are jobs of extortion.'
She further said that the BNP could have at least tried to stay good for a year, but within six months of coming to power, they have made everything partisan.
Referring to the July Popular Uprising, Mitu said that emotions run high whenever July is mentioned. She alleged that although the BNP accuses the NCP of politically using the July movement, the work of preserving the memory of the martyrs and the spirit of the movement will continue.
She said that the NCP and their political allies are continuously working to implement the ideals and spirit of the July Popular Uprising.
The meeting, presided over by NCP Brahmanbaria District Branch Convener Md. Jahangir Alam and conducted by Member Secretary Engineer Aminul Haque Chowdhury, was also addressed by Member of Parliament Rokeya Begum, NCP Central Joint Member Secretary Faridul Haque, and Central Organizing Secretary Md.
