Prime Minister Tareq Rahman to give new homes to 100 families rendered homeless by floods

Prime Minister Tareq Rahman will hand over new houses to 100 families who lost their homes in the recent devastating floods in Banshkhali upazila, Chattogram. During his visit to Cox's Bazar and Chattogram on Sunday (August 9), he will hand over the keys of new houses to these families at a rally to be held in Banshkhali.

Chattogram's Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Mohammad Sharif Uddin confirmed this information. He said this government initiative has created new hope among the families who became helpless after losing everything in the flood water. The government is building houses on their own land to replace those destroyed, and the Prime Minister himself will hand them over—this has made them extremely happy.

According to district administration sources, a total of 100 affected families have already been identified, 10 each from Banshkhali municipality and its 9 unions. Houses are being built for them with government funding. Keeping natural disasters, especially floods, in mind, RCC pillars, wood and tin have been used in the houses. Due to the tin roofs and walls, the houses are being considered 'disaster-resilient'.

Each house measures 18 feet in length and 12 feet in width, and will have two rooms and an attached toilet (5 feet x 5 feet). Former mayor of Banshkhali municipality Kamrul Islam Hossaini said those who do not have the ability to build a new house with their own means will receive this gift from the Prime Minister.

Chattogram's Additional Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Sharif Uddin said, 'The Prime Minister will visit three upazilas of Chattogram on Sunday, and among them, keys to houses will be given to 100 families in Banshkhali. Construction work of the houses, funded by the Local Government Division, is almost at its final stage.'

Ahead of the Prime Minister's upcoming visit, Chattogram's Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Zahidul Islam Mia inspected the venue adjacent to Baharchhara sea beach in Banshkhali upazila and the houses under construction. He observed the overall preparation including stage, pandal, security arrangements, seating for guests, and discussed progress with the officials concerned.

The Deputy Commissioner said, 'Overall preparations are progressing rapidly ahead of the Prime Minister's visit. Everyone has been instructed to remain alert to ensure the event is held smoothly.' Regarding the quality of the houses, he said he has spoken with engineers and construction workers about the durability and quality of the work. Quality materials are being used considering natural disasters, and I hope construction will be completed within the scheduled time.
