On Friday (August 7) at noon, he said these things at a meeting with print and electronic media workers at Bagerhat Circuit House.
Regarding the Awami League's return to politics, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said the time has not yet come for them to return to politics. Those who carried out atrocities against the people of the country and were involved in incidents such as enforced disappearances and killings have not shown any repentance or remorse so far. Rather, he alleged, they are still engaged in various conspiracies.
He further said if anyone associated with the politics of the Awami League or its affiliated organizations is to be included in Jamaat, the approval of the central leadership is mandatory. There is no scope to take anyone into the party without the permission of the centre, and no such approval has been sought or given so far.
Regarding the July Charter, he said the people's verdict must be respected. The opinion of the majority cannot be devalued, and the people are the ultimate judge.
Regarding the opposition's role in parliament, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said there are precedents of undignified behaviour in the parliament in the past. Jamaat wants a decent, responsible and constructive parliament. If necessary, the government will be cooperated with, and a rational opposition will also be made in the interest of the people.
Regarding the freedom of the media, he said the environment for the media to work independently must be ensured so that journalists can deliver truthful and objective news.
At the meeting, chaired by Bagerhat district Jamaat Ameer Maulana Rezaul Karim, central Jamaat leader and Member of Parliament Principal Izzat Ullah, Bagerhat-1 constituency Member of Parliament Principal Md. Moshiur Rahman, Bagerhat-2 constituency Member of Parliament Sheikh Manzurul Haque Rahad, Bagerhat-4 constituency Member of Parliament Principal Abdul Alim, district Jamaat secretary Sheikh Muhammad Yunus, Bagerhat Press Club president Abu Said Shunu, general secretary Hedayet Hossain Liton, and journalists of various media were present.
After the meeting, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman took part in the Rukon conference held at the Bagerhat Kamil Madrasa premises. Later, he performed Jumu'ah prayers at the Sixty Dome Mosque and left for Dhaka by road in the afternoon.
