Colonel (Retd) Oli Ahmad named 11-party alliance's candidate for presidential election

The alliance leaders made the announcement at a press conference held at the government residence of the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament on Sunday (August 9) afternoon. The press conference informed that Oli Ahmad has been nominated for the post of president on behalf of this alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami.

Earlier, in last January, the 11-party alliance had announced candidates for 253 seats in the parliamentary election, in which Jamaat-e-Islami got 179 seats, the National Citizens' Party (NCP) 30 seats, and the LDP 7 seats.

Although the term of the current President, Md. Sahabuddin, lasts until April 2028, there is a provision for presidential election through the parliamentary process. According to the constitution, if the office of the president falls vacant, a new president is elected by the votes of parliament members.

The alliance said, "To advance the spirit of the July mass uprising and the reform process, a qualified person is needed for the post of president. Oli Ahmad is a figure with long political experience, who has been selected with the consent of all partners of the alliance."

The press conference also informed that the alliance has appealed to work unitedly in the presidential election and to seek support from all parliament members.
