A new metro rail worth Tk 60,000 crore is coming

The project will have a total of 24 stations. Of these, there will be both underground and elevated routes. Important areas including Gabtali, Dhaka Udyan, Basila, Mohammadpur, Jigatola, Science Lab, New Market, Azimpur, Lalbagh, Chakbazar, Mitford, Nayabazar, Dholaikhal, Dayaganj, Kaptan Bazar and Demra will come under this route.

In addition, there is also a proposal to construct a branch line from Gulistan to Sadarghat via Nayabazar. MRT-2 will be connected with other metro rail lines. As a result, connections will be made with MRT-5 at Gabtali, MRT-1, 4 and 6 at Kamalapur, and MRT-4 at Signboard.

The World Bank has been consulted for financing a major portion of the project. The World Bank has given in-principle consent to provide about Tk 53,000 crore in loan assistance. Discussions are also ongoing with the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) for loan assistance.

Currently, the project's pre-project development proposal (PDPP) is under review at the Planning Commission. After that, the proposal will be sent to the Economic Relations Division to obtain loans from development partners.

According to the plan, the target is to start construction at the end of 2026 or the beginning of 2027 and launch the metro rail by 2030. There are also plans to extend the line from Narayanganj to Munshiganj in the future.
