At a press briefing in New York on Wednesday, he said that earlier martyred President Ziaur Rahman and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia represented Bangladesh at the UN General Assembly. Continuing their legacy, Tareq Rahman will now highlight on the world stage the hopes, aspirations, and feelings of the country's people in Bangla.
Mahdi Amin said that on the second day of the Prime Minister's visit, a meeting with representatives of the Gates Foundation discussed cooperation in the health and agriculture sectors. Discussions covered the use of technology in agriculture, ‘Smart Farmer Card’, domestic vaccine production, and a plan to recruit 100,000 health workers. He said a positive response was received regarding technical and financial cooperation in this regard.
Regarding the Rohingya crisis, Mahdi Amin said that at a high-level meeting jointly organized by Bangladesh and The Gambia, the Prime Minister presented a five-point proposal, including safe, voluntary, and dignified repatriation. At the same time, calls were made to stop persecution in Myanmar, ensure justice for human rights violations, and increase international support for the Rohingyas sheltered in Bangladesh.
In addition, meetings with the Prime Minister of Croatia and the President of Iran discussed trade, investment, employment, the security of expatriate Bangladeshis, and regional peace and stability.
To tackle climate change, the Prime Minister presented various plans such as dredging rivers and canals, tree planting, the Teesta master plan, the Padma barrage, renewable energy, and the use of electric vehicles. He also demanded a fair share of international climate funds for countries at climate risk.
Mahdi Amin further said that an agreement was signed between Biman Bangladesh Airlines and the US company Boeing. He noted that the presence of top US officials at the signing ceremony reflected the two countries' interest in expanding trade and investment relations.
