The four institutions that received preliminary approval are—bKash Digital Bank, Boost-Robi, Digital Banking of Bhutan-DK, and Nova Digital Bank-Banglalink and Square.
Earlier, 12 institutions applied to establish digital banks. Among them are British Bangla Digital Bank, Amar Digital Bank-22 MFI, 36 Digital Bank, Amar Bank, App Bank-Farmers, Maitri Digital Bank, Upakari Digital Bank and Munafa Islamic Digital Bank-Akij, among other institutions.
Earlier, in October 2023, Bangladesh Bank approved Nagad Digital Bank and Kori Digital Bank. After the change of government, Nagad's license was kept under review, and Kori was given additional time to fulfill the policy conditions.
At Thursday's meeting, it was decided to give a preliminary license to Kori Digital Bank as well, alongside the new four.
