Speaking at an exchange meeting with members of the executive committee of Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) at the Secretariat on Tuesday, he said the tendency to spread rumors and misleading information through fake pages on social media and online portals has increased. To tackle this problem, it is urgent to determine an acceptable definition and criteria for journalism.
The state minister said discussions will be held with journalists' organizations, including BFUJ, DUJ and DRU, and editors to determine the definition and criteria of journalists. He noted that specific criteria are also needed in relevant policies, including the provision of benefits from the Journalists Welfare Trust.
Expressing the government's sincerity in implementing a time-befitting wage board for journalists, he said discussions will be held with the Ministry of Labour for quick progress on the matter. At the same time, he assured that discussions with DRU will continue for the professional development and welfare of journalists.
At the meeting, DRU President Abu Saleh Akon and General Secretary Mainul Hasan Sohel highlighted various problems faced by journalists. They called for ensuring a media-friendly environment and taking necessary steps to prevent harassment of journalists under the proposed Cyber Protection Act.
