In an interview with the Indian newspaper The Hindu, Humayun Kabir said Dhaka alleges that Sheikh Hasina and her associates are trying to destabilize Bangladesh while staying in Delhi. He called on India to rein in their activities.
The State Minister for Foreign Affairs said the activities of exiled Awami League leaders will not bring any good to India or Bangladesh. If India cooperates on this issue, progress will be possible in normalizing bilateral relations between the two countries. He also said discussions between the two countries on this issue are ongoing.
Noting that relations with India are among Bangladesh's priorities, Humayun Kabir said the Prime Minister has never said he will not visit India. The visit can take place at an appropriate time, and he is hopeful about it.
Praising the role of Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi, he said he is playing a good role and working to improve relations between the two countries. He also expressed hope that Delhi will give importance to his views.
Humayun Kabir also accused Sheikh Hasina of killing nearly 2,000 people during the suppression of the July-August 2024 mass uprising. According to him, the people of Bangladesh need a ‘clean break’ from the past. However, he also said discussions with India on this issue are continuing.
Highlighting the importance of ‘strategic autonomy’ in Bangladesh's foreign policy, Humayun Kabir said every country wants strategic autonomy according to its own needs and national interests. Bangladesh is no exception.
He said if the two governments sit for talks keeping national interests in mind, solutions to all problems are possible. At the same time, Dhaka expects mutual cooperation in which neither side will allow activities contrary to the other country's interests—such mutual cooperation is expected by Dhaka.
