Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ariful Islam issued the order after a hearing on Wednesday (October 7). Prosecution lawyer Harun-or-Rashid confirmed the matter.
In court, defense lawyer Mahbubur Rahman sought bail on condition of a compromise. The plaintiff in the case, Mariam's father S M Masum Billah, submitted a compromise agreement and said he had no objection to Gazi Nazrul's bail. However, the state opposed the bail. After hearing both sides, the court rejected the bail application.
Earlier, on September 20, police recovered the hanging body of Gazi Nazrul's second wife Mariam Khatun (19) from a flat at Nyam Bhaban in the capital. Later, Mariam's father filed a case for abetment of suicide at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station. In it, Gazi Nazrul Islam, his first wife Maksuda Islam, and brother-in-law Obaidur Rahman were made accused.
The case alleges physical and mental torture of Mariam. The plaintiff claims that Mariam committed suicide due to torture and instigation by the accused. However, these allegations have not yet been proven in court.
Earlier, Gazi Nazrul was taken on remand several times in the case. Maksuda Islam and Obaidur Rahman were also arrested. Later, Maksuda Islam secured bail.
Notably, after several videos of private moments between Mariam and Gazi Nazrul spread on social media last July, discussion about him began. In light of this, on July 22 Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami expelled him from the party.
