Opposition leader and Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Shafiqur Rahman said, ‘The government should not forget the 17 years of persecution.’
He said, ‘We are not seeing anything new. What the previous fascists did, you are now doing an exact photocopy of it. You are also carrying out repression against the opposition just like before.’
He said this at an event at the Press Club on Sunday.
The Jamaat Ameer said, ‘Why are you disregarding the mandate of 70 percent of people? The events of ’71 took place precisely because the ’70 election was disregarded.’
He said, ‘BNP sometimes jabs us over the ’96 election. Yet it was because of selfless support in ’91 that the BNP was able to form the government.’
He commented that party men have been appointed in a neutral institution like the Election Commission.
