Budget for FY 2026-27 approved by voice vote; size increased by Tk 1.48 lakh crore compared to previous fiscal year

The national budget of Tk 9.38 lakh crore for the fiscal year 2026-2027 has been passed in the National Parliament. The budget, approved by voice vote, will come into effect from next Wednesday (July 1).

On Tuesday (June 30), Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury proposed the passage of the budget in the National Parliament session, which was approved by voice vote. The session was presided over by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed Bir Bikram.

The size of the new fiscal year's budget is Tk 9.38 lakh crore, which is Tk 1.48 lakh crore more than the outgoing FY 2025-26 budget of Tk 7.90 lakh crore.

Before the budget was passed, 59 demands related to the expenditures of various ministries and departments were presented in parliament. Against these demands, members of parliament submitted a total of 1,344 cut motions. After discussions, all cut motions were disposed of by voice vote.

It is noteworthy that the Finance Minister presented the proposed budget for FY 2026-2027 in the National Parliament on June 11. Subsequently, a long discussion on the budget took place with the participation of ruling party, opposition party, and independent members of parliament.

Taking part in the general discussion on the budget, Prime Minister and Leader of the House Tarique Rahman said that this is not just a government budget, but should be considered a budget for national reconstruction. He called for political unity to restore the country's economy, alleviate people's suffering, and establish discipline in the financial sector.

The Prime Minister further said that the new budget outlines a plan to place Bangladesh's economy on a new foundation. The government is moving forward with the goal of ensuring that no repetition of autocracy or fascism occurs in the future through equitable development and building an accountable state.
