AI glasses increase cheating in exams, how does this smart technology work?
With the advancement of technology, cheating methods in exams have also reached a new level. Instead of handwritten notes or paper, artificial intelligence (AI)-powered smart glasses are now becoming a new medium of fraud. Particularly in several East Asian countries, the use of AI glasses for cheating in exams is increasing at an alarming rate.

According to a report by international media CNN, two examinees were recently detained in South Korea on charges of using AI glasses during an English exam. This is the first detected case of using such technology for cheating in exams in the country.

Meanwhile, in a medical entrance exam in Taiwan, one examinee was detained due to suspicious behavior. During the exam, he was repeatedly looking at his glasses. Later, an inspection revealed that the glasses were emitting heat and were equipped with smart technology.

In light of these incidents, last month China ordered mandatory inspection of all types of glasses for examinees taking the country's largest college entrance exam, 'Gaokao'. About 10 million students participated in this exam this year.

How do AI glasses work?

The use of AI glasses is increasing rapidly worldwide. After Meta launched their Ray-Ban Smart Glasses in 2023, the popularity of such devices has grown further. According to the company, nearly 7 million AI glasses were sold last year alone.

According to experts, although AI glasses look like ordinary glasses, they contain cameras, microphones, displays, and internet connectivity. Connected to smartphones or online networks, they can quickly analyze information with the help of modern AI models.

Meng Zilli, an associate professor at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, conducted a test with an AI glasses available in the market and found that as soon as an examinee looks at the question paper, the glasses' camera captures the question. It is then sent to an AI language model via the internet. Within seconds, the generated answer appears on the small display of the glasses' lens.

In a mock exam conducted with 100 examinees, he observed that those who used AI glasses assistance ranked among the top five in the results.

Experts fear that if AI glasses technology becomes more advanced, the security of the examination system could face major challenges. Therefore, many countries have already taken initiatives to strengthen smart device detection systems at exam centers and strictly verify wearable technology, including glasses.
