NBR warns taxpayers of fraudsters trying to extort money by threatening audit
A fraudulent gang is trying to extort money from taxpayers by threatening to audit their tax documents (income tax returns). The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has urged taxpayers to beware of such scams.

On Sunday (July 5), NBR Chairman Ahsan Habib said the NBR is committed to ensuring hassle-free and transparent services for taxpayers. Therefore, he urged not to engage in any transactions if anyone demands money by offering exemption from audit or threatening legal complications.

He said if anyone demands money posing as an NBR official, the matter should be immediately reported to the nearest police station or law enforcement agency. Strict legal action will be taken against such fraud.

The NBR said that recently, fraudsters have been calling taxpayers from various mobile numbers, claiming that their tax documents have been selected for audit. Then they try to extort money by offering exemption from audit or threatening legal complications.

The organization clarified that no NBR official contacts taxpayers through personal mobile numbers or unauthorized channels regarding tax document audits. If any return is selected for audit, the concerned taxpayer is informed only through an official written notice as per the law.

The NBR further said that taxes, fees, or any other government dues must be deposited into the state treasury only through government challans. No official has the authority to receive money personally or through bKash, Nagad, Rocket, or personal bank accounts.

The NBR advised that if anyone receives such suspicious phone calls, SMS, or emails, they should not be confused and should contact the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Taxes of the concerned tax zone.
