Argentina reaches quarter-finals by defeating Egypt in an incredible comeback
Despite trailing by two goals, the current world champions Argentina have written a remarkable comeback story. Lionel Scaloni's team, once facing elimination, secured their place in the 2026 World Cup quarter-finals by defeating Egypt 3-2 in a dramatic last-minute finish.

Egypt took advantage of Argentina's midfield weakness from the start of the match at Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium. In the 15th minute, Yasser Ibrahim scored a brilliant header from Marwan Attia's cross to put his team ahead.

After conceding the goal, Argentina had a golden opportunity to equalize. They were awarded a penalty after a foul inside the box. However, Egypt's goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir made an excellent save to deny Lionel Messi's shot.

Shobeir continued to thwart Argentina's attacks one after another. He saved Mac Allister's header, Julian Alvarez's shot, and Messi's long-range effort, keeping Egypt's 1-0 lead intact at halftime.

In the second half, a goal from Egypt was disallowed after a VAR review in the 60th minute, but they doubled their lead in the 67th minute. From a fast counter-attack initiated by Mohamed Salah, Mostafa Ziko scored with an easy finish from Haysem Hassan's cross.

After falling 2-0 behind, Argentina fought back. In the 79th minute, Cristian Romero scored a header from a precise cross by Messi to reduce the deficit.

Four minutes later, the Albiceleste equalized. From an attack created by Lautaro Martinez, Messi's shot touched the goalkeeper's hand, hit the crossbar, and went into the net. The score became 2-2.

Just as the match seemed headed for extra time, the decisive moment arrived. In the second minute of added time, Enzo Fernandez scored the winning goal with a header from an assist by Lautaro Martinez.

Despite trailing by two goals, Argentina secured a 3-2 victory and booked their place in the last eight. With this stunning comeback, the current world champions kept their dream of retaining the title alive.
