Flood situation worsens in Chattogram, lakhs of people marooned amid food crisis
Due to continuous rainfall and hill torrents, the flood situation in Chattogram has further deteriorated. At least 4.5 lakh people have been marooned in various areas of the district. The most affected is Satkania upazila, where about 80 percent of the area is flooded, leaving over 3.5 lakh people suffering.

Besides, vast areas of Chandanaish, Lohagara, Banskhali and Boalkhali have also been submerged in floodwater. A crisis of safe drinking water and food has emerged in these waterlogged regions. Many families are waiting for safe shelter and emergency relief assistance.

In Satkania, floodwater has entered the upazila health complex, court, office of the additional superintendent of police, municipality office and police station. As countless homes have been submerged, thousands of people are living in miserable conditions.

On the other hand, in Banskhali, over five hundred mud houses have collapsed due to floodwater. On Wednesday night (July 8), the Chattogram-Banskhali main road in the Bailchhari area went under water, severing road communication with Chattogram city.

Parvez Mosharraf, a resident of Puichhari Union, said that due to heavy rainfall and high tide, most areas of the union have gone under water.

Meanwhile, the water levels of the Sangu and Dolu rivers are flowing above the danger mark. In several places on the Keranirhat-Bandarban road, floodwater is flowing over the road, disrupting vehicular movement. Due to the flood, all educational institutions in the upazila have also been declared closed.

A severe flood situation has also arisen in Chandanaish. The low-lying areas of two municipalities and eight unions of the upazila have been flooded, leaving at least 20,000 people marooned. Due to hill torrents, the water of the Shankha river has crossed the danger level and entered human settlements.

Besides, on the Chattogram-Cox's Bazar highway, in the Hashimpur area of Chandanaish, about one and a half feet of water is flowing over the road, disrupting the movement of long-distance buses, cargo vehicles and small vehicles. This has caused long traffic jams on the highway, causing extreme suffering to passengers.
