Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Md. Dabir Uddin has set a unique example of honesty and transparency by returning the unspent Tk 73,36,365 to the government treasury after completing the re-excavation project of three canals in Saltha Upazila, Faridpur.
According to upazila administration sources, a total of Tk 1,67,49,409 was allocated for the re-excavation of three canals spanning 4.535 kilometers in Atghar, Ramkantapur, and Sonapur unions. After completing the project work over about three months and paying workers' wages and other necessary expenses, the remaining money was deposited into the government treasury.
Although allegations of irregularities have been raised in various places regarding the implementation of the government's canal excavation program nationwide, a different picture was seen in this Saltha project. By implementing the project without any wastage, UNO Md. Dabir Uddin has earned praise from local representatives, political activists, and the general public.
The office of the Upazila Project Implementation Officer (PIO) said that the project was inaugurated by the Member of Parliament for Faridpur-2 constituency and State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Shama Obaed Islam. Later, the Deputy Commissioner of Faridpur, Mazharul Islam, inspected the progress and quality of the work. After the inspection, they expressed satisfaction with the quality and implementation of the project.
Project member Shahin said that the UNO regularly visited the project area to supervise the work and ensured transparent payment of all bills, including workers' wages.
Another member, Mosharraf Hossain, said, “Compared to other upazilas, the work here has been much better. Since the UNO joined, positive changes have been seen in the development of Saltha.”
Regarding this, UNO Md. Dabir Uddin said that ensuring transparency, accountability, and honesty at every stage of development projects is the main goal of the administration. He said, “Ensuring the maximum proper use of government money is our responsibility. After all necessary expenses, the unspent money has been returned to the government treasury. The proper use of government funds is one of the foundations of good governance.”
