New political crisis may arise if people's expectations are not met: GM Quader

District Correspondent Published: Tuesday, 14 July 2026 1 min read

He said these things while talking to journalists at his residence 'Palli Nibas' in Senpara area of the city on the second day of his Rangpur visit on Tuesday (July 14). Later, he participated in various programs organized on the occasion of the seventh death anniversary of the founder chairman of Jatiya Party, former President and Pallibandhu Hussain Muhammad Ershad.

GM Quader said the main objective of the July movement was to bring about change in the state system, eliminate discrimination, and establish an accountable and impartial administrative system for the people. But that goal has not been achieved yet. For this reason, it is logical to call the movement not successful or failed, but unfinished.

He said the quota reform movement gradually turned into an anti-discrimination movement. People's expectation was that a new political culture would be established in running the state. But in reality, politicization of the administration, discrimination in recruitment, and political influence still exist. As a result, the expectations of the common people have not been met.

Expressing concern over the current political situation, the Jatiya Party chairman said the people want a free, fair and acceptable election. At the same time, they expect a political environment where freedom of expression will be ensured, dissenting opinions will be respected, and the rule of law will be established.

He said there is still a lack of political tolerance, cases and attacks, and various types of uncertainty. If these situations do not change, it will be difficult to consolidate the democratic environment.

In the words of GM Quader, if the declared goals of the July movement are not implemented, the demand for an even larger political movement or new change may become stronger in the future. If the expectations of the people are ignored for a long time, there is a risk of a new political crisis.

Emphasizing the establishment of accountability in running the state, he said the administration, law enforcement agencies, and the recruitment process must be freed from political influence. If state institutions are not run impartially, it will not be possible to restore the people's trust. The foundation of democracy is the trust of the people, and to gain that trust, it is essential to ensure the rule of law and eliminate discrimination.

GM Quader also expressed concern over the spread of drugs in the country. He said drugs have now become a major threat to society, and the youth society is the most affected. Drugs must be controlled not only through law enforcement operations but also through coordinated initiatives of families, educational institutions, social organizations, and the government. At the same time, he called for strict surveillance to stop the entry of drugs across the border.

He further said there is no alternative to creating a participatory, acceptable, and impartial political environment for the political stability and economic progress of the country. He also emphasized making state institutions more effective, transparent, and accountable.

Earlier, various programs were organized by Jatiya Party in Rangpur on the occasion of the seventh death anniversary of Pallibandhu Hussain Muhammad Ershad. In the morning, a memorial meeting, prayers, and milad mahfil were held at 'Palli Nibas'. Later, central, district, and metropolitan leaders and activists participated in visiting Ershad's grave, reciting the Holy Quran, and offering special prayers seeking forgiveness for his soul.

At that time, GM Quader said the development philosophy of Pallibandhu Hussain Muhammad Ershad is still relevant to the people of Bangladesh. People will remember his contribution to infrastructure development, progress of rural areas, and development of the Rangpur region. He commented that Jatiya Party will continue to work for the welfare of the people by adhering to his ideals.
