Jamaat Ameer demands trial of killers by reviving October 28 case
Dr. Shafiqur Rahman, opposition leader and Ameer of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, remembering those killed in the October 28, 2006 lathi-baitar attack, described the incident of that day as a 'premeditated anti-humanity genocide.' At the same time, he demanded that the withdrawn case filed over the incident be revived and those involved be brought under speedy trial. He made the demand in a statement issued on Saturday (October 26).

In the statement, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said that to foil the election, on October 28, 2006, terrorists of the 14-party alliance led by the Awami League attacked Jamaat's rally at Paltan with lathis, boat oars and firearms. That day, 14 leaders and activists were killed and more than a thousand were injured across the country, including Dhaka. Barbaric incidents such as dancing on dead bodies after killing people also took place. He alleged that it was through October 28 that terrorist politics began in the country, which continued until the August 5 student-people uprising. The previous government withdrew the case to save the killers. In the current changed situation, he expressed hope for establishing justice.
