TCB is taking initiatives to modernize AI-based market analysis and procurement system
The Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB) is taking initiatives to make the government procurement system more efficient, transparent, and competitive by using artificial intelligence (AI)-based market analysis and increasing the use of technology in the government procurement process. At the same time, the organization has also announced initiatives to make cost estimates more realistic, increase the number of participants in tenders, and integrate TCB's smart family card with other government service cards.

On Thursday, at the event titled 'Evaluation of TCB Activities' held in the conference room of the Ministry of Commerce, Commerce Secretary Md. Selim Uddin gave directives on these matters. Additional Secretary (WTO) Khadija Naznin, Additional Secretary (IIT) Shibir Bichitra Barua, and TCB Chairman Brigadier General Faisal Azad were present at the event.

The Commerce Secretary said that since independence, TCB has been playing an important role by delivering essential commodities to the marginal people of the country. However, according to the demands of the time, the procurement system of the organization needs to be more modern and information-based.

He said that the smaller the gap between the official cost estimate and the final contract price in the government procurement process, the more it will reflect the capability and cost determination efficiency of the concerned organization. For this, he emphasized preparing more accurate cost estimates by analyzing domestic and international markets, price trends in neighboring countries, and past market data.

Md. Selim Uddin said that to increase competition in government procurement, it is essential to increase the number of organizations participating in tenders. This will reduce monopolistic tendencies on the one hand, and ensure the best use of public funds on the other.

He further informed that a concept note has been prepared to incorporate AI-based analysis in market management and government procurement processes. A committee will be formed comprising the Ministry of Commerce, TCB, the Finance Division, and relevant technology experts on this matter. Subsequent actions will be taken based on the committee's recommendations.

At the event, TCB Chairman Brigadier General Faisal Azad said that initiatives will be taken to integrate TCB's smart family card with other government cards. Additionally, there are plans to add more essential products to the product basket for consumers.

He informed that model stores will be established in Barisal, Rajshahi, and Dhaka. Besides, tenders have already been invited through the e-GP method to introduce the Point of Sale (POS) system. Once this system is implemented, payments can be made quickly and transparently by scanning the card.

The event also discussed the sale of soap and detergent along with TCB's subsidized products. It was informed at that time that the purchase of these additional products is completely optional; there will be no obligation for consumers.

Furthermore, the participating officials presented their opinions on TCB's digital transformation, modernization of the procurement system, market management, strengthening the supply system, and future action plans.
