We are against religious politics: State Minister Mir Helal
State Minister for Land and Chittagong Hill Tracts Affairs Barrister Mir Mohammad Helal Uddin said his party is against using religion for political gain. According to him, those who use religion as capital for politics do so primarily to achieve their own interests; it does not bring real benefit to the state or the common people.

He made this comment in response to questions from journalists after a courtesy meeting with the Amir of Hefazat-e-Islam at Babunagar Madrasa in Fatikchhari, Chittagong on Sunday (July 19).

The State Minister said they do not see Hefazat-e-Islam as a political organization. Rather, it is an organization that works to preserve Islamic values and on religious matters.

He said, “We believe Hefazat-e-Islam is not a political organization. It is an organization to protect Islam in Bangladesh and guide Islam on the right path. I personally like those who speak for Islam but do not involve themselves in politics, in principle.”

Regarding the current situation of the country and local government elections, Mir Helal said the government has announced plans to hold local government elections quickly. However, due to the recent severe flood situation, priority should now be given to ensuring the safety of people's lives and property.

He said, “The three hill districts, Chittagong, and Sylhet have experienced the worst flooding in the last 43 years. The main task now is to deal with this disaster and restore normal life for the people. After that, we should think about politics and elections.”

Present at the courtesy meeting were Fatikchhari Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Saeed Muhammad Ibrahim, Fatikchhari Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rabiul Alam Khan, Hefazat-e-Islam's Naib-e-Amir Allama Ayub Babunagari, central leaders Maulana Junayed Bin Jalal, Maulana Abu Taleb, Maulana Yahya, Nazirhat Municipality BNP convener Azahar Mia, along with central and local leaders of BNP and Hefazat-e-Islam.
