In the weekly press briefing held on Tuesday (July 21), it was informed that during the 2022 World Cup, transactions through intermediaries amounted to about 140 crore taka, but this time the broadcasting rights have been purchased directly.
The ministry said that the media rights for the 2026 World Cup have been purchased for 3.85 million US dollars. Later, by sub-licensing to four broadcasters in the country, most of the funds have been recovered.
As a result, the government's actual expenditure is now limited to only four to five crore taka. It is hoped that this expenditure can also be adjusted through ongoing revenue-sharing discussions.
The Information Minister said that the directive from Prime Minister Tarek Rahman was that the people of the country should be able to enjoy the World Cup, but without creating excessive pressure on public funds. With that goal in mind, the broadcasting rights have been acquired directly, bypassing intermediaries.
