A source close to the President confirmed the information, stating that he decided to step down due to personal reasons, not political pressure.
Meanwhile, the Speaker of the National Assembly, Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, has called an emergency press conference at 5 PM. An official of the Parliament Secretariat, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the briefing has been arranged regarding the President's resignation.
Md. Sahabuddin served as a Commissioner of the Anti-Corruption Commission from 2011 to 2016. Later, leaving a top position at Islami Bank, he was sworn in as the 22nd President of Bangladesh on April 24, 2023.
After the political change on August 5, 2024, several political parties, including the anti-discrimination student movement, demanded his resignation. Protests and various programs were also held in front of Bangabhaban. However, citing constitutional complexities, the then interim government did not agree to remove him. The BNP also did not support the matter at that time.
Although he administered the oath of the interim government on August 8, 2024, his state activities became largely limited afterwards. Apart from regular constitutional duties, his presence at important state events was very limited.
In an interview with international news agency Reuters in December 2025, Md. Sahabuddin said he was interested in stepping down. He also commented that he felt humiliated by the removal of his pictures from Bangladeshi embassies abroad.
After the formation of a new government following the national elections in February this year, discussions about changing the President resurfaced, but no formal decision on the matter was announced at that time. However, after a gap of four months, the speculation ended with the President's resignation.
