UN Adopts Bangladesh-Sponsored 'Culture of Peace' Resolution
Reaffirming the global commitment to dialogue, tolerance, solidarity, and peaceful coexistence, the United Nations General Assembly has adopted the Bangladesh-sponsored resolution titled "Follow-up to the Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace."

The resolution was passed with the support of a majority of member states during a UN General Assembly meeting on Friday (July 24).

Presenting the resolution, Ambassador Salahuddin Noman Chowdhury, Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the UN, emphasized that sustained dialogue, mutual understanding, respect for diversity, and a steadfast commitment to the principles of the UN Charter are vital for building peaceful, inclusive, and tolerant societies.

He expressed gratitude to the member states for their constructive engagement and broad support for the resolution. He further urged collective action to promote a culture of dialogue over division, cooperation over conflict, and mutual understanding over intolerance.

First adopted in 1999 through Bangladesh's initiative, this resolution has served as a cornerstone for fostering a "Culture of Peace" at the UN for nearly two and a half decades.

The resolution stresses the importance of strengthening values of respect for diversity, tolerance, solidarity, and non-violence, while prioritizing conflict prevention, peaceful coexistence, and multilateral cooperation.
