Trial in Shapla Chattar Murder Case to Begin July 27
The investigation report in the Shapla Chattar murder case will be submitted and formal trial proceedings will commence on Monday (July 27), announced Md. Aminul Islam, Chief Prosecutor of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT).

He disclosed the information on Saturday (July 25).

Among the accused arrested in the case are former State Minister for Home Affairs Shamsul Hoque Tuku, retired Major General Ziaul Ahsan, former Minister Dr. Dipu Moni, former Inspector General of Police (IGP) A K M Shahidul Hoque, former DIG of Police Mollah Nazrul Islam, Advisory Council President of Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee Shahriar Kabir, former DIG Abdul Jalil Mondal, and journalists Farzana Rupa and Mozammel Babu.

Prosecution sources stated that on May 14, the International Crimes Tribunal issued an order showing Dr. Dipu Moni, Farzana Rupa, and Mozammel Babu shown arrested in connection with this case.

Earlier, on May 7, the prosecution submitted an application for production warrants against them. On that day, Prosecutor Gazi M. H. Tamim informed the tribunal that Dipu Moni, serving as the Foreign Minister at the time, was implicated in disseminating misleading propaganda internationally regarding the operations of law enforcement agencies at Shapla Chattar on May 5, 2013. Concurrently, journalists Farzana Rupa and Mozammel Babu were accused of running provocative broadcasts about the event on Ekattor Television.

According to prosecution data, a total of 58 people were killed across four locations, including Dhaka, in connection with the events surrounding Shapla Chattar on May 5, 2013. Investigative agency figures indicate that among the victims whose identities were verified, 32 were killed in Dhaka, 20 in Narayanganj, 5 in Chittagong, and 1 in Comilla.

The official commencement of judicial proceedings, along with the formal submission of the investigation report, is scheduled for July 27.
