Tarique Rahman’s India visit ‘almost certain’, Bangladesh seeks assurance to stop Sheikh Hasina’s politics
The discussion over the India visit of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has almost reached the final stage. He may visit Delhi in the third week of this month, possibly on August 21-22. It would be his first bilateral visit, but Bangladesh is seeking clear guarantees from India on several issues.

Bangladesh’s main expectation is that former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, who has taken shelter in India, cannot deliver any political speech or carry out any political activities from Indian soil. Recently, Sheikh Hasina’s press conference in Delhi has created fresh tensions in bilateral relations. Dhaka wants the visit to be finalised only after getting complete assurance from India on this matter.

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister has been invited to the BRICS summit in New Delhi next September as the chair of BIMSTEC. However, no final decision has been made yet on participating in that visit.
