The incident took place today, Saturday (August 15), at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital during a ceremony for disbursing retirement and welfare benefits to private teachers and employees.
Because of old age and physical illness, one teacher could not climb onto the stage. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman himself came down from the stage. He went to that teacher, handed over the honorary cheque to his hands, and showed respect. The Prime Minister's such humane behavior created an emotional atmosphere among those present at the event.
At the time, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Education Minister A N M Ehsanul Haque Milon, Prime Minister's Additional Press Secretary Atiqur Rahman Rumon, and others concerned were present.
At the event, the Prime Minister said, 'Teachers will not have to go from office to office to get their retirement money anymore. There will be no suffering. They will not have to resort to intermediaries.'
The Prime Minister further said, 'We have seen the real condition of teachers in a video. Earlier, they had to pay bribes to get allowance money. Today, money is being sent to teachers' accounts so easily, but it was not so easy before. The past fascist Awami League government plundered and left the two retirement boards bankrupt.'
Earlier at the event, the Prime Minister inaugurated the distribution of retirement and welfare allowance money to teachers.
To pay the teachers' dues accumulated over four years, the government has allocated a one-time amount of Tk 2,035 crore 86 lakh. The money is being sent to the respective bank accounts of beneficiary teachers and employees simultaneously in 64 districts of the country.
