He made these remarks on Friday (August 21) while inaugurating a cleanliness drive at the original Buriganga channel adjacent to the Section Bridge in the capital. The Dhaka District Administration and the voluntary organization 'BD Clean' jointly organized the programme.
The State Minister said keeping canals and rivers free of waste is essential to protect the environment and public health. If this initiative succeeds, local residents will benefit from it.
The original Buriganga channel, about 3.2 kilometers long, has lost its water flow due to long-standing encroachment and waste dumping. Locals are suffering from stench, mosquito infestation, and waterlogging as a result.
After the cleanliness drive, there are plans to restore navigability of the channel, construct walkways on both banks, and beautify the area. Monitoring will also be strengthened to prevent future encroachment and pollution.
