A decision has been taken to construct a highway on the Rahmatpur–Hijla–Mehendiganj–Bhola route to connect the island district Bhola with the country's main road network. The decision was made at a meeting at the Prime Minister's Office in Tejgaon on Saturday (August 22).
Among three proposals for establishing direct road communication between Bhola and Dhaka and Barishal, the route proposed by the Roads and Highways Department has been selected. Under the project, in addition to widening existing roads, new roads and three small bridges will be constructed.

Once the project is implemented, Bhola will have direct road communication with Barishal, Dhaka and other parts of the country. It is expected that travel time and costs will decrease, as well as dependence on waterways will reduce.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has instructed to quickly examine the feasibility and implementability of the project and move forward with the initiative.
