Private sector joining in rehabilitating flood victims: Finance Minister
Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has said government assistance for the rehabilitation of flood-affected people must reach the actual victims transparently. He said that in addition to immediate assistance, NGOs and the private sector are being involved in long-term rehabilitation.

He said these things while speaking as the chief guest at the inauguration ceremony of the rehabilitation assistance project for flood-affected families at the Chattogram Circuit House auditorium on Sunday morning.

The finance minister said it is difficult for the government alone to distribute all assistance properly. This creates opportunities for corruption and wastage. If the private sector and NGOs are involved in the distribution system, efficiency increases as well as wastage and corruption can be reduced.

He said assistance is being delivered to people through various effective methods, including family cards. Partnerships with organizations including BRAC are important in this regard. Unless actual rehabilitation is ensured, effective assistance for affected people cannot be guaranteed.

Due to heavy rainfall in the first and second weeks of last July, severe floods occurred in 10 districts including Chattogram, Cox's Bazar, Bandarban, Rangamati and Khagrachhari. About 866,000 people were affected.
