The first general meeting of the National Editors Council (NEC) was held in the capital. At the meeting held at a hotel on Monday, editors of 29 daily newspapers published from Dhaka and various regions of the country participated.

At the meeting, Jaijaidin editor Shafiq Rehman was elected president for the interim period. Amar Desh editor Mahmudur Rahman was elected general secretary and Wada editor Shafiqul Alam was elected treasurer. The constitution of the National Editors Council was approved with some amendments.

At the meeting chaired by President Shafiq Rehman, participating editors expressed various opinions on press freedom, professional development and unity of editors.

Mahmudur Rahman said, in addition to expanding the National Editors Council further, communication among journalists must be increased. He emphasized editors' unity to ensure independent journalism.

Yugantor editor Abdul Hai Shikdar stressed ensuring truthfulness and accountability in journalism. He proposed introducing an award in the name of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam for contribution to journalism. Later, the proposal was approved and a decision was taken to give the 'Nazrul Padak' every year.

People's View editor Osman Gani Mansur called on NEC to play an effective role in improving the professional environment of journalism. Wada editor Shafiqul Alam said Bangladesh after the mass uprising needs a strong and independent platform of editors.

In his presidential speech, Shafiq Rehman said journalists have an important role in establishing peace and stability and democratic progress in the country. He sought cooperation from all to bring editors across the country under one platform.

At the general meeting, editors of various newspapers including Naya Diganta, Protidiner Bangladesh, New Nation, Bangladesh Protidin, Manabkantha, Khabor Songbad, Bangladesh-er Khabar, Bhorer Dak, Janata, The Bangladesh Post, Banijjo Protidin, Khola Kagoj, Rupali Bangladesh, Bhorer Bangla, The Global Post, Nawroz, Karnaphuli, Dainik Lok Samaj, Notun Probhat, Dainik Newtimes, Dainik Jalalabad, Juger Chinta, Dainik Probaha and Bangladesh Bani gave their opinions.
