On Monday, Japanese government Special Envoy for National Reconciliation in Myanmar and Chairman of the Nippon Foundation Yohei Sasakawa paid a courtesy call on the Prime Minister at the Bangladesh Secretariat. During the meeting, discussions were held on various issues of mutual interest between the two countries, including the Rohingya crisis.

The Prime Minister said Bangladesh's economy, infrastructure and overall management have come under additional pressure due to giving shelter to a huge number of Rohingyas for a long time. He also remarked that if the Rohingyas return to their own country, opportunities would be created to improve their quality of life in various sectors, including education and health.

The Prime Minister urged Sasakawa to play a role from his position in ensuring the safe and dignified repatriation of the Rohingyas. He also thanked the Japanese government for its humanitarian cooperation in resolving the crisis.

Sasakawa informed that he has discussed the Rohingya crisis with the President of Myanmar. He thought that although the Myanmar government is sincere about resolving the crisis, progress in repatriation is taking time due to the complex situation in Rakhine State. He assured that he would continue to make utmost efforts to resolve the crisis.

At the meeting, emphasis was placed on strengthening multilateral efforts and international cooperation alongside bilateral initiatives for a sustainable solution to the Rohingya crisis.

Additionally, discussions were held on establishing a vaccine production center in Bangladesh, increasing Japanese investment, and improving Bangladesh-Myanmar bilateral relations. The Prime Minister said the government is working to ensure an investment-friendly environment in Bangladesh.
