NDF wants deferral of Mitford's new deputy director appointment
The National Doctors' Forum (NDF) has demanded a stay on the appointment of Dr. Shahria Shayla Jahan as deputy director of Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital in the capital. It also demanded that the current deputy director, Dr. Muhammad Habibur Rahman, be reinstated.

On Sunday, NDF president Professor Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam and general secretary Professor Dr. Mahmud Hossain made the demand in a joint statement.

The statement said that although Dr. Muhammad Habibur Rahman was removed from the post of deputy director of Mitford Hospital through a notification on September 1, no specific reason was given. His successor, Dr. Shahria Shayla Jahan, had faced allegations of financial irregularities and administrative mismanagement while serving at Meherpur 250-bed General Hospital.

The organisation claimed that in the context of these allegations, Dr. Shahria Shayla Jahan was appointed as special officer on duty at the Directorate General of Health Services on November 16 last year. Appointing her to an administrative post at an important hospital in the capital without publishing the investigation report has raised questions about transparency and accountability.

NDF's two demands are: withdrawing the relevant notification and reinstating Dr. Muhammad Habibur Rahman to his post, and keeping Dr. Shahria Shayla Jahan's appointment stayed until the investigation report into allegations against her is published.

The statement also said that ensuring transparency, merit and accountability in the administrative leadership of an institution as important as Mitford Hospital is crucial. The organisation warned that if the demands are not implemented, it will announce programmes in phases with the medical community.
