A Silent Witness to History and Heritage: A Mosque in Sembawang, Singapore
Even amid the bustle of modern urban life in Singapore, some places still retain the memories of a village life that is on the verge of disappearing. Masjid Petempatan Melayu Sembawang is one such historic structure. Because of its rich heritage, green surroundings, and nostalgic kampung atmosphere, it is known as one of Singapore's surviving coastal kampung (village) mosques.

As soon as one enters the mosque's grounds, a huge rubber tree comes into view. The tree is believed to be over a century old. At one time, vast areas of northern Singapore were covered with rubber plantations. The tree is seen as the last living relic of an abandoned plantation from that era. Thus, it is not just a tree, but a living witness to Sembawang's past.

In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, rubber cultivation spread in northern Singapore. Some nearby areas were altered to create rubber plantations. Later, in the 1940s, parts of the plantation were cleared to build Kampong Tengah.

The mosque was later established through the initiative of the Muslim residents of this area. Local residents built the mosque in 1963 using their weekly savings. As a result, the mosque's history is deeply intertwined with the social and cultural roots of the local Muslim community here.

One of the most attractive aspects of the mosque is its distinct village environment. Chickens and roosters roaming freely in the grounds, the extensive greenery all around, and traditional architecture together create a feeling completely different from the familiar urban scenery of modern Singapore.

Because it is located in scenic surroundings near Sembawang Beach, the mosque seems to hold the memory of a past kampung life. Its peaceful environment, closeness to nature, and old-world atmosphere present it to visitors as a nostalgic and tranquil place.

The journey to the mosque is also a different experience

Since this historic mosque is located some distance from the main road, one has to walk a bit after getting off public transport. According to travelers' experiences, a convenient nearby place to alight is the Aft Andrews Ave bus stop. Bus 882 runs there regularly. The bus can be taken from Sembawang Bus Interchange, which is located next to the MRT station.

The distance from the bus stop to the mosque is about 700 meters. At a normal pace, it takes about 9 minutes. The route proceeds along Andrews Avenue past a quiet residential area. Then, continuing along Jalan Selimang toward Jalan Mempurong, one reaches this historic mosque.

Behind the development of the modern city-state Singapore, the scant memories of a lost kampung life that still survive—Masjid Petempatan Melayu Sembawang is a unique symbol of them. The mosque, century-old rubber tree, green nature, and roaming chickens—all together seem to bring past Singapore alive before the present.
