At the inauguration ceremony, DSCC Administrator Bir Muktijoddha Md. Abdus Salam said that due to illegal encroachment and indiscriminate dumping of waste, the existence of the Buriganga is now under threat. This programme will play an important role in raising awareness among riverside residents, traders and the general public to protect the river.

He said the government is giving importance to making the Buriganga, Dhaleshwari, Shitalakshya, Balu and Turag rivers around Dhaka navigable. He also said the relevant ministries have been instructed to revive the rivers.

The DSCC Administrator said a special three-month programme has been undertaken continuously for cleanliness and dengue prevention. Along with daily cleanliness activities in 75 wards, a special drive will be conducted every Saturday. Legal action will be taken for negligence in duty and if Aedes mosquito larvae are found.

Speaking about plans to turn waste into resources, he said activities are underway to produce electricity, gas, compost fertilizer and diesel through waste recycling. He expressed hope of reaching its initial stage within the next few months.

At the inauguration of the programme, if waste lying on the banks of the Buriganga is collected and deposited at the designated floating market, daily necessities are given as gifts in exchange. This floating market has been set up temporarily by decorating a launch.

At the event, Member of Parliament for Dhaka-7 constituency Hamidur Rahman, DSCC Chief Executive Officer Md. Khaibar Rahman, Chief Waste Management Officer Air Commodore Md. Mahbubur Rahman Talukder, along with senior officials of the city corporation and local dignitaries, were present.
