Rajnath Singh made these allegations at a press conference in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, on Friday (16 October). He said that the model of violence seen in the change of power in Bangladesh is the path Congress also wants to follow.
Rajnath also alleged that while in power, Congress had tried to bring the Election Commission under its control. Referring to an incident in 1993 in this context, he said that changes were made in the Election Commission at that time. Although there was a recommendation to remove the then Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla, the Congress government later promoted him to the post of Chief Election Commissioner.
Rajnath Singh claimed that after the introduction of voter identity cards, Congress could no longer form a government alone. He also questioned the opposition to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists and the protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Warning Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rajnath said that democracy does not give anyone the right to resort to violence. He alleged that Rahul is practicing a politics of obstruction and disorder.
