Government taking initiative to launch breast cancer screening at grassroots: Health Minister
Health and Family Welfare Minister Sardar Md. Sakhawat Hossain said the government is taking various steps to launch breast cancer screening activities at the grassroots level. He said this while speaking as chief guest at a discussion meeting held at the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute in the capital on Sunday, marking 'Breast Cancer Awareness Month-2026'.

The health minister said the government is working to detect the disease at an early stage and raise awareness among women through infrastructure development, recruitment of new doctors and midwives, and accelerating training programs. Recalling doctors' social responsibility, he called on them to go to their respective villages for at least a few days a year to make women aware of the early signs of breast cancer.

In his speech as special guest, Dr. S M Ziauddin Haider, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Health, said 71 to 73 percent of total deaths in the country are due to non-communicable diseases. In addition, breast cancer is detected in 15 out of every 100,000 women in the country, and about 63 percent of those affected do not come under any kind of screening. As a result, because the disease is detected late, treatment becomes complicated.
