The information was disclosed in a press release signed by Md. Mamun Hasan, Senior Information Officer of the ministry, on Sunday.
In the DO letter, the minister mentioned that to ensure sustainable production of hilsa, a national resource and GI product, the Mother Hilsa Conservation Campaign is being conducted from October 8 to October 29. During this period, all types of fish harvesting, transportation, storage, and buying and selling in designated areas are completely prohibited and punishable offenses.
The minister said that it is not possible to make the campaign 100% successful with law enforcement agencies alone; active role of public representatives and social support are necessary for this. He sought all-out cooperation from MPs to inspire fishermen through grassroots-level activists and notable persons in their respective constituencies and to prevent illegal fish harvesting.
