Employment agreement with Japan: worker recruitment to begin April 1, 2027
Bangladesh and Japan have signed the ‘ESDP-MOC’ agreement on employment and skills development. The agreement was finally signed between the two countries on October 17, 2026. Under it, Japan will begin recruiting Bangladeshi workers from April 1, 2027.

The agreement was completed through nearly a year of efforts by the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment and the Government of Japan. On behalf of Bangladesh, the Secretary of the Ministry of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment and representatives of Japan's Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, and the National Police Agency signed it. A copy of the agreement is scheduled to be officially handed over during Prime Minister Tareq Rahman's upcoming visit to Japan.

Minister of Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Ariful Haque Chowdhury said that through this agreement, workers' protection will be ensured, cooperation in recruiting workers between the two countries will increase, and opportunities for the skills development of Bangladeshi workers will be created. As a result, workers can get relatively better salaries and the opportunity to live in Japan for a long time.

According to the agreement, Bangladeshi workers will receive legal protection equivalent to that of local workers in Japan, and equal opportunities for men and women in the workplace are to be ensured. There will be no scope to dismiss female workers or subject them to discrimination due to pregnancy or childbirth. For this reason, there is also no obligation for forced repatriation.
