Jamaat Secretary General Golam Parwar gave this explanation at an emergency press conference at the party's central office on Tuesday.
Golam Parwar said that although the invitation card for the event contained the names of all government guests, the name of the opposition leader with the status of a minister was not there. It was also not mentioned in what capacity he would attend the event. The Jamaat leader also raised the question whether the opposition leader would sit in the audience row.
Earlier, on Monday, at the plaque unveiling ceremony of the July Memorial at Osmani Udyan in the capital, Prime Minister Tareq Rahman expressed anger over the absence of opposition leaders. He said that those because of whose sacrifices they could today become opposition leaders and members of parliament should have stood beside the families of the martyrs and injured. In addition, the Prime Minister called for constructive opposition in Parliament, moving away from the old political culture.
