Bangladesh has urged swift finalization and implementation of the outlines of the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) to harness the economic potential among D-8 member countries. Commerce Minister Khondaker Abdul Muktadir made the call at a bilateral meeting with D-8 Secretary-General Sohail Mahmood on the sidelines of the 42nd COMCEC Ministerial-level Conference in Istanbul, Turkey, yesterday Saturday (November 2).

At the meeting, discussions were held on removing barriers to expanding trade among the countries, increasing tariff facilities, and facilitating trade. The commerce minister said that in the current global economic context, it is crucially important to increase trade and investment among D-8 member countries. To this end, he requested the D-8 Secretariat to play an active role in quickly implementing the outlines of the FTA and PTA. At the same time, the commerce minister highlighted the need to restructure the alliance and undertake result-oriented activities to make it more effective.
