At the meeting, it was informed that the feasibility study for the construction of the Second Padma and Second Jamuna bridges is scheduled to be completed by September next year. After receiving the study report, decisions will be made on the final locations, designs and costs of the two megaprojects. If the Y-shaped Second Padma Bridge is constructed, a strong alternative communication system will be developed for the country's south-western region and with the Mongla, Benapole and Darshana land ports. On the other hand, the Second Jamuna Bridge will bring about major development in the overall communication system of the northern region, including Rangpur.
Alongside, detailed discussions were held at the meeting on the Padma Barrage project to address water scarcity in the dry season, increase agricultural production and maintain environmental balance. Besides, there was a call to strengthen inter-agency coordination among the relevant organizations regarding financing of the projects, land acquisition and rehabilitation of affected people. Road Transport and Bridges Minister Sheikh Rabiul Alam, along with state ministers, secretaries and senior officials of the relevant ministries and departments, were present at the meeting.
