At DU, even a Tk 1 fine requires a visit to the bank
At Dhaka University’s (DU) Central Library and Science Library, students have to pay fines if they return books late. However, even when the fine is only Tk 1, they have to go to a bank to pay it; the money must be deposited there following a prescribed process.

Recently, the matter came up for discussion again through a social media post by Nabila Haque, a student of the 2023-24 academic year in the Department of Physics. In the post, she wrote that she was fined Tk 1 because a book borrowed from the library was returned 8 to 9 days late; now she has to go to Janata Bank at TSC and stand in line to pay the fine.

Nabila Haque said almost all work at Dhaka University is done manually. It would be convenient for students if there were a system for depositing money at the library.

In this regard, University Librarian (Acting) Dr. Kazi Mostak Gausul Hoq said this is a very old rule; regardless of the amount of the fine, it has to be deposited through a bank. However, at the Central Library, if the fine is four or five taka, it is no longer taken through the bank. After the matter came to notice, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) inquired into it, and the system of how much fine will be accepted online and how much must be deposited at the bank is being reviewed again.
