Bangladesh tops list of migrants arriving in Italy by sea
From the beginning of this year to the first week of July, Bangladeshis are the most numerous among migrants arriving in Italy by sea. Somalia is in second place after Bangladesh. However, compared to the same period in the previous two years, the total number of migrants arriving in Italy by sea has significantly decreased.

According to the latest data published by the Italian Ministry of Interior, a total of 14,623 migrants crossed the Mediterranean Sea and arrived in the country from January 1 to July 7, 2026.

Highest number of Bangladeshis

Country-wise statistics show that 4,314 Bangladeshis have arrived in Italy by sea this year. This is approximately one-third of the total arriving migrants.

After Bangladesh are Somalia (1,702), Sudan (1,371), Pakistan (1,185), Algeria (1,106), Egypt (936), Eritrea (662), Tunisia (626), Mali (310), Nigeria (291), Ivory Coast (216), Ethiopia (199), Iran (183), South Sudan (180), and Guinea (179).

Additionally, the identity verification process is ongoing for another 1,163 migrants from various countries.

Arrivals down compared to two years

According to statistics, 31,430 migrants arrived in Italy by sea from January 1 to July 7, 2025. During the same period in 2024, the number was 26,664. In the same period this year, 14,623 have arrived.

By this count, the number of migrants has decreased by about 53 percent compared to 2025 and about 45 percent compared to 2024.

Monthly breakdown

From January to June of this year, the number of migrants arriving in Italy by sea was lower each month compared to the same period in the previous two years.

On a monthly basis, 1,457 arrived in January, 2,510 in February, 2,150 in March, 2,459 in April, 3,054 in May, and 2,758 in June.

The Italian Ministry of Interior stated that these statistics have been prepared based on data on sea arrivals recorded until 8 am on July 7. The number may change slightly after verification.
