He made this announcement while speaking to journalists at the National Parliament premises on Monday (July 13) night.

Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said, 'The 2014 election was voterless, the 2024 election was a dummy. After that, the election that took place, the people gave their verdict through a referendum. Both sides were supposed to take oaths. We, the opposition, have fulfilled our duties, but the government did not keep its promises.'

He further said, 'If there is no provision for a referendum in the constitution, then there is also no provision for the 2026 election. In that case, there is no government according to the constitution, nor is there an opposition party. One part of the people's verdict will be accepted, and another part will be ignored; that cannot happen.'

Announcing that they will not back down from their position demanding the implementation of the referendum verdict, he said, 'The movement will continue until our demands are met. Today's walkout from parliament is part of that movement.'

Earlier, when a proposal to form a special committee related to constitutional amendment was tabled in parliament, opposition members walked out of the session in protest.

Regarding this, National Parliament Chief Whip Mohammad Nurul Islam said that the opposition's walkout from parliament is their democratic right. He informed that the constitutional amendment committee will only formulate recommendations, and the government wants to move forward through discussions with all political parties on this matter.
