He made these remarks as the chief guest at the inaugural ceremony of a four-day workshop titled 'Efficient, People-Friendly and Accountable Public Administration: Strategy for Implementing Government Commitments' organized on the occasion of 'National Public Service Day-2026' at the BCS Administration Academy auditorium in Shahbagh, Dhaka on Sunday (July 19).
The Home Minister said the current government has high expectations from the people. To meet those expectations, transparency, accountability and professionalism must be ensured at every level of the administration. He mentioned that the civil service is one of the main driving forces of state governance. Therefore, government officials must work not as rulers but as servants of the people.
He said the main goal of the administration should not be just organizing formal workshops, but ensuring the real welfare of the people.
Highlighting the importance of accurate statistics for formulating correct policies in the country, the Minister said that in the past, various national statistics were distorted for political purposes. Information such as the census, agricultural production, and per capita income were not presented correctly. He therefore emphasized the need to strengthen the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) into a more robust institution.
Calling for giving the highest priority to the agriculture and remittance sectors to strengthen the economic foundation, Salahuddin Ahmed said the development of agriculture-based industries, expansion of technical education, and building a skilled workforce are essential conditions for sustainable development. He also mentioned the need to make family planning programs more active to control the population.
The Home Minister said policies are formulated based on the government's political commitments and election manifesto. It is the responsibility of the administration to adopt, implement, and monitor projects in light of those policies. Addressing the officials, he said no activities can be conducted outside the rules and regulations, and duties must be performed with sincerity to implement the mandate given by the people.
The event was chaired by Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration Md. Ehshanul Haque, while the special guest was the Rector (Secretary) of BCS Administration Academy Mohammad Altaf-Ul-Alam. The welcome speech was given by Additional Secretary (CPT) of the Ministry of Public Administration Mohammad Monirul Islam.
