Government viewing opposition's participation in presidential election narrowly: Jamaat
The government is evaluating the opposition's participation in the presidential election not with a liberal and democratic outlook but with political narrowness, said Jamaat-e-Islami Assistant Secretary General and former Member of Parliament Dr. A.H.M. Hamidur Rahman Azad.

In a statement on Friday (August 21), he said the opposition's participation in the presidential election was a symbolic protest against the limitations of the government's reform process and an initiative for democratic practice. Even though the election outcome was known in advance, they took part in the election to make their position clear before the people.

He further said the statement that the opposition's oath taken in the Constitution Reform Commission has become questionable because of their participation in the presidential election is not acceptable. He also raised the question of how the oath taken as a member of parliament remains valid if no parliamentary election is held through constitutional process in 2026.

Hamidur Rahman Azad said constitutional reforms are essential to make democracy effective, accountable and sustainable. He urged the government to give importance to people's expectations and take effective initiatives to implement the verdict of the referendum and reforms.
